Metallic Watercolor Cards

Splatter/Stipple Painting

Erum Tasneem’s Creative Coloring class is the latest Altenew Academy class which I’ve completed. I was not familiar with her teaching style or videos prior to the class. The class was a lovely adventure of fun techniques and trying new things. I was inspired to apply some of the watercolor techniques on an art journal, which is shared here. Today’s post is about using a type of watercolor that I previously used for highlights and added interest, metallics. These two cards are painted entirely with a set of 14 metallic watercolors from Altenew. The paints look very different on white watercolor paper versus black.

Black Watercolor Paper

The black watercolor paper is from Hero Arts. It is 100% recycled cotton, 140 lb. (300 gsm,) and relatively smooth. This makes it better for stamping and the paint does not pool between noticeable bumps. Both cards were stamped with Versamark and heat embossed with white powder.  It is a good idea to use an anti-static powder over the surface before stamping to prevent stray embossing powder from permanently attaching to the paper. The stamped image is an outline stamp from Altenew. It is one of their Paint-A-Flower sets, Fashion Monger Dahlia.

The blossoms use a variety of different colors in the pan set. My favorite is Aquamarine. The leaves look pretty with the Jade and Prasiolite colors. The backgrounds use stippling and splattering techniques. On the white card, the predominant color is Gold Pearl. On the black, it is Enchanted Gold. Both cards were splattered with gold, clean water, and eventually with Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleedproof white. To draw attention to the floral image on the black card front, I cut the Circled Hugs out of vellum and positioned it over the flowers. It was hard to read the sentiment, so I cut just the word out of Tonic Studios Dahlia Embossed paper. This is the same paper that is underneath the die-cut card front and black frame. All the card fronts and frames are cut to size with Gina K. Designs Master Layout Set 1. The white card does not have a sentiment added to the front. This is because it can be added once a recipient and occasion are determined.
