Art Journaling – Hands

Art journaling is a very personal pursuit. I only show a small number of journal entries to other people. This set of pages uses my traced hand as the focal image. Even though the content of the text is not very personal, using an actual body part is!

I used Altenew’s masking paper to trace my hand and used the negative and positive images for both pages. To create the left-hand side, I flipped the papers over. On this page I used watercolor brushes and painted around the handprint. Using the cardstock die-cut from the Simple Shapes Cover die I traced around the interior sections of the die all over the hand, repositioning as needed. Creating stencils from dies expands the ways to use them. On the right-hand side, I used the Burlap Texture die to make a stencil for the background.

The cardstock stencil held up well to a lot of ink blending with many different colors. By overlapping the ink in some areas, you can create secondary colors. The picture above shows the mask on the journal page.

Next, I stamped a variety of floral stamps from the Wild and Free set using Permanent Black ink. The centers were later colored with a yellow pencil from the Woodless Coloring pencil set.

The final pieces to add to the page are ink blended die-cut letters and floral die-cuts from the Wild and Free set. The floral pieces are cut from glossy card stock which were colored with isopropyl alcohol and dye ink reinkers.

After applying the watercolor from the Tropical Fiesta brush set, I stamped tiny triangles with permanent black ink. Even with adding the extra visual dimension with the stamping this page was too distracting with the bright watercolor. I tempered it with some geometric pieces of cardstock. The picture above shows them being auditioned on the page for size and placement. Then the pieces were lightly painted with pan watercolors. Pan watercolors are easier for me to quickly water down than the watercolor brushes. I used the same paints to randomly fill in some of the geometric shapes on the hand. In addition, a few shapes have words written on them with colored pencils.

The final steps to completing this page include hand writing a quote on the random pieces of dried cardstock strewn around the hand and then splattering the page with Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleedproof white.
