Recently, I received some new Spellbinders dies. They are the fun set from Nichol Spohr’s Halloween Felt Stitch & Create. Immediately, I knew that I wanted to make the Fright Night Felines in a little less spooky version. Rainbow to the rescue! This meant that the same colors could be used on the adorable Patchwork Boo ghosts to coordinate. Then they were turned into one of my granddaughter’s favorite games, Tic Tac Toe. Without a playing surface, they were lacking an obvious purpose.

Make the Pieces
Using the Merino Wool Felt Kaleidoscope Collection, I made 5 cats and 5 ghosts. The cats have a layer of Lutrador (70 weight) in between the layers to provide additional stability. They don’t really need it if the game is mainly decorative. But for active use, I’d recommend it. The ghosts are smaller, and therefore it isn’t necessary to stabilize them as much. The weight of the wool felt should be enough.

My granddaughter loved the colorful playing pieces and wanted to continue playing long after I reached a good stopping point!

Making the Board
As a person with a lot of fabric on hand, the obvious go-to is to make a mini quilt/game board.

Cut nine 6-inch squares from black fabric
Cut six 1″ x 6″ strips from white fabric
Cut four 1″ x 17.5″ strips from white fabric
Cut two 1″ x 18.5″ strips from white fabric

Sew the six 1″ x 6″ strips to six of the black squares. Press the seams open or to the dark side. Referencing the photo below, sew three squares together, netting three rows of three black squares with two white strips on either side of the middle block.

Sew the 1″x 17.5″ strips to the tops of each 3-block unit and one strip onto the bottom unit. Sew all of the units together in the configuration below.

Attach the last two strips on either side of the mini quilt. It should measure 18.5″ square. If it doesn’t, trim it so the sides are even. Cut a piece of backing fabric the size of the completed mini quilt/game board. You can do a pillowcase type finish or quilt it traditionally and bind it.
Note – if I were to do this again
What I would do differently is not have made this with batting in between the top layer and the flannel backing. It made it too squishy, and the edges aren’t as flat because I rolled the backing to the front instead of traditionally binding it. It would be fine without a middle layer, though it does roll up nicely this way. Finish it the way that feels best to you.

It is truly a “Cat’s Game” with this set!
